International code for classifying goods (the 'Harmonized System', HS). It determines the duty rate and import regulations — a wrong number can hold up a shipment.

The HS Code (Harmonized System) is a worldwide standardised, six-digit numbering system for classifying goods. From it derive the duty rate, import regulations and possible permits — it is the starting point of every customs clearance.

The code is structured hierarchically: the first six digits are identical worldwide, with national subdivisions below them. The classification determines the duty rate, VAT, possible permit requirements and the statistical recording.

Significance

Why this matters for your import.

For import into Switzerland the classification decides the actual duties — and thereby the landed cost of your goods. A clean, verifiable classification is the basis of any reliable calculation.

In practice

How you'll come across the term.

Before an enquiry we clarify the HS Code of your goods: it determines which duties and proofs apply on import into Switzerland — and prevents a shipment from being held at customs.

Common mistake

Too coarse or convenient a classification that customs later corrects — with back-claims and delays as a result. When in doubt we clarify the number in advance.

Let's talk plainly about your goods.
